Racing Yachts

Racing yachts started using Durepox many years ago and for three main reasons: firstly they needed a tough dry sail coating that could be finished and hold that friction reducing finish for as long as possible, The coating needed to be light weight and capable of producing colours that match any sponsors requirements or the race boats required livery.

Why Durepox?  Toughness, Speed, weight and colour answer this.  When first used in the America’s cup the boats wanted colours that where also primers to save weight and match the boats graphic requirements.  They spray the different colours on and the primer gave them enough depth to sand out all the masking lines back to a smooth racing finish before applying High performance Clear (HPC). Then the boats could be finished to their individual requirements giving them a friction reducing, long lasting racing finish.

Success Factors:

  1. The Durepox colour matching is excellent but it is a primer so if matching to other paints check the colour match first.
  2. Durepox can match many colours even Pantones that are often used by Graphic designers. If we don’t have the colour mixed already it can take a couple of weeks to perfect the formula.
  3. Durepox has Fluro pigments which are great for the hi viz areas on foils and decks

System

  1. Durepox Hi-Solids this is optional if more final fairing is required.
  2. Durepox Primer (Colour matched to the boat requirements)
  3. Durepox High-performance Clear

Hint & Tips

  1. If the boat is not fair enough you can sand through the primer colours which will then require a second application. If the boat needs it the Hi- Solids primer is a great way of getting that final bit of fairing right.
  2. The primer is quick and when fully cured very tough so can become more difficult to sand or polish. This is what makes it great but do any processing on the Durepox as quickly as possible next day if you can. It will save you time and effort.
  3. Durepox works well with non-skid beads and produces a really tough anti-slip.
  4. If areas of matt or satin are required try the flattening powder additive.
  5. Some applicators will mix the primer and HPC to produce different effects and gloss levels.
  6. It’s toughness also makes it very popular for Hydrofoils, lifting foils, keels and rudders
