Clear Coat Timber

First used for Cockpit tables with glass like highly polished finishes.  Also popular in the Architectural world for exterior wood finishes and wet or damp areas.

Durepox High Performance Clear (HPC) has good build, fast curing, strong bond, waterproofing properties, excellent UV protection and stability.

Timbers can vary hugely and the amount of paint required to prime and fill grain can vary a lot.

System

  1. Optional: HPC Thinned (sometimes rolled or applied with a spreader to help it into open grain timbers).
  2. HPC Sprayed and sanded with P320.
  3. Optional: HPC repeated as required. This completely depends on the surface and depth of grain required to fill.
  4. Optional: For marine applications it is popular to recoat with a known marine Acrylic urethane. This is to make polishing easier and match the boats finish.  Awlgrip, Awlcraft 2000 clear is very popular and successful.

Hint & Tips

  1. Clean timber with Acetone as it breaks down the oil in timbers. Keep rotating or replacing the cloth until it comes up clean this may take longer depending on the type of wood.
  2. Thin the initial coats and let cure. This will help penetrate the timber and raise the grain. Once cured sand to remove the raised grain.
  3. You will need to reapply the Durepox HPC until the grain is filled. If you can keep the component warm and leave some time between applications this will help the stability of the final finish.
  4. Be careful not to flood a flat table which is easy to do on a horizontal surface. Paint always builds better in multiple thin coats.
  5. Durepox clear is really tough and it can be polished but it’s not easy hence to use of a polishable top coat like Awlcraft 2000 clear.
